Liyuan Scholars Colloquium No. 124
Lecture Title: Experimental Design: Historical Evolution and Cutting-Edge Applications
Speaker: Sun Fasheng (Professor, Northeast Normal University)
Date & Time: 3:30–4:30 PM, May 11, 2025
Venue: Classroom 1, Huixing Building, Yuehai Campus, Shenzhen University
Abstract: This talk aims to systematically outline the developmental history of experimental design and its current key research frontiers, covering core areas such as order-of-addition experiments and computer experiments. Additionally, it delves into the innovative applications of experimental design in interdisciplinary contexts, including Bayesian optimization, initialization of algorithm hyperparameters, and subsampling in big data analytics.
Biography: Sun Fasheng is a professor and Ph.D. supervisor at Northeast Normal University, and an outstanding teacher in Jilin Province. He received his Ph.D. in Probability and Mathematical Statistics from Nankai University. He has visited the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at Simon Fraser University in Canada and the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Los Angeles in the United States. His research interests include computer experiments, big data sampling, high-dimensional data analysis, and their applications in machine learning and artificial intelligence. The new methods he proposed have been included in English monographs published by publishers such as Chapman & Hall/CRC and Springer. He has won several honors, including the Second Prize of the Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education, the Excellent Achievement Award in Statistical Science Research of China, the Youth Science and Technology Award of Jilin Province, and the Academic Achievement Award in Natural Science of Jilin Province.
