Liyuan Distinguished Scholar Lecture Series Session 39
Lecture Title: Mathematical Research in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
Speaker: Academician Jiping Zhang (Peking University)
Time: 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM, March 19, 2026
Venue: Lecture Hall 3, Huixing Building, Yuehai Campus, Shenzhen University
Abstract: In recent years, artificial intelligence (including machine learning and large language models) has significantly advanced the field of mathematics, yielding remarkable research results and exerting an increasingly profound and far-reaching impact. From computer-aided research to human-machine collaboration, these developments are transforming the way mathematical theorems are proven and how mathematicians conduct their research. We should embrace this new era of artificial intelligence with enthusiasm, but without blind optimism.
Speaker Profile: Jiping Zhang is the Boya Chair Professor at Peking University, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Director of the China-Russia Center for Mathematics. He has received the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the Ministry of Education’s Changjiang Distinguished Professorship, the National May 1st Labor Medal, the National Advanced Worker Award, the National Outstanding Science and Technology Worker Award, the National Natural Science Award, and the Chen Xingshen Mathematics Award, among others. He currently serves as a member of the MDPI (China) Physics & Mathematics Scientific Board, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of China (Mathematics Volume), Honorary Editor-in-Chief of Symmetry, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Asia-European Journal of Mathematics, and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Algebra and its Applications, among other journals. He previously served as Editor-in-Chief of Algebra Colloq and Associate Editor of the *Acta Mathematica Sinica*, as well as Vice President of the Chinese Mathematical Society, Member of the Development and Exchange Committee of the International Mathematical Union, Executive Deputy Director of the Mathematics and Physics Division of the Science and Technology Commission of the Ministry of Education, and Vice President of the China Association for Science and Technology. His research focuses on algebra, and he has achieved outstanding accomplishments in the study of representation theory of finite groups. He previously served as Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences at Peking University, where he made outstanding contributions to the development of the discipline of mathematics. In particular, the innovative talent development program he spearheaded and led has cultivated world-class talent, including the “Golden Generation” of mathematicians.
