Liyuan Distinguished Scholars' Lecture, 18th installment

Lecture Title:Some mathematical theories on Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system in perturbative framework

Speaker:Prof. Tong Yang (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University)

Lecture time:October 27, 2023 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Lecture location:Classroom No. 3, 1/F, Hui Xing Building, Yuehai Campus, Shenzhen University, China

Overview:It is well known that the Boltzmann equation is closely related to the classical systems of fluid dynamics, such as Euler and Navier-Stokes equations, that can be derived in vanishing Knudsen limit either by Hilbert expansion or Chapman-Enskog expansion. In this talk, we will present some understanding on the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system in the perturbative framework through spectrum analysis by focusing on the spectrum approach for the study on diffusion limit. The talk is based on some work with Hailiang Li and Mingying Zhong.

Speaker Introduction:Prof. Tong Yang is currently the Chair Professor of the Department of Applied Mathematics at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Sun Yat-sen University in 1987 and 1990, and his Ph.D. in 1993 from the University of California, Davis. Prof. Yang joined the City University of Hong Kong in 1994 and will join the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2022.His research areas are partial differential equations and kinetic theory. Prof. Yang was elected as an External Member of the European Academy of Sciences (EAS) and a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (also known as the World Academy of Sciences) in 2018 and 2021, respectively, and a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences (HKAS) in 2021, and a member of the European Academy of Humanities and Natural Sciences (Academia Europaea) in 2022. In 2022, he will be elected as a Foreign Member of the Academia Europaea. His scientific and technological awards include the Hong Kong RGC Senior Research Scholar Award (2020), the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award (2012), the Croucher Foundation Senior Research Achievement Award in Hong Kong (2011), the National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund for Collaboration between Overseas Young Scholars of Overseas Countries, Hong Kong and Macao (2004), and the Silver Prize of the Morningside Mathematics Prize of the First Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (1998), among others.
