Abstract: As technology advances, functional data are increasingly being recorded across both one-dimensional and multi-dimensional domains. The high dimensionality and complex features of functional data pose significant challenges to exploratory data analysis (EDA). To address practical application needs, researchers have developed various EDA tools—including visualization, outlier detection, and clustering methods—that can handle different types of functional data. This presentation provides an overview of recent progress in exploratory functional data analysis (EFDA). Additionally, some related studies will be discussed to highlight potential areas for further development.

Speaker Profile:Dai Wenlin is a researcher and doctoral advisor at the Institute of Statistics and Big Data at Renmin University of China, and Deputy Director of the National Governance Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Innovation Platform. His primary research interests include nonparametric statistics, complex data analysis, and applied statistics. As the lead author, he has published more than 30 papers in top-tier domestic and international journals in statistics and machine learning. He has led projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Social Science Fund. He is a recipient of the Young Scholar Award from the Pan-Chinese Statistical Association and serves as a council member of both the Statistical Survey Branch and the Interdisciplinary Statistics Branch of the Chinese Society for Field Statistics.
