Liyuan Scholars Colloquium Session 180

Title: Methods for Early Warning of Critical States in Complex Systems

Speaker: Professor Rui Liu (South China University of Technology)

Time: 16:00–17:00, September 24, 2026

Location: Room 1, Huixing Building, Yuehai Campus, Shenzhen University

Abstract: In the dynamical processes of complex systems, critical transitions in state may occur; that is, there exists a “critical point” or “critical state” before the system’s state changes. Timely identification and early warning of this critical state typically pose a challenge. In this presentation, we will introduce some of our efforts and results in early warning of critical states in complex systems based on high-dimensional data. We will primarily cover methods for predicting the future states of high-dimensional dynamical systems, methods for screening biomarkers in dynamic networks, and methods for early warning of critical points in dynamical systems.

Speaker Profile: Rui Liu is a professor in the School of Mathematics at South China University of Technology. His research focuses on the early warning of critical points in complex dynamical systems, and he has developed mathematical theories and intelligent learning algorithms in areas such as data mining and time series analysis. He has received scientific and technological awards including the First Prize in Natural Sciences from the Shanghai Municipal Government and the Second Prize in Natural Sciences from the Guangdong Provincial Government. In 2020, he was selected for the Youth Program of the Ministry of Education’s National Major Talent Program, and in 2024, he was selected for the Ministry of Education’s National Major Talent Program.
