Liyuan Scholars Colloquium Session 181

Title: Structural Analysis, Theory, and Intelligence

Speaker: Professor Kailiang Wu (Southern University of Science and Technology)

Time: 16:00–17:00, September 28, 2026

Location: Conference Room 305, Alumni Plaza, Yuehai Campus, Shenzhen University

Abstract:The natural world operates according to a series of complex yet fundamental laws, which embody both the dynamics of change and inherent structure. Differential equations serve as the cornerstone for describing numerous fundamental physical laws; their intrinsic structure or properties—such as the positivity, boundedness, zero divergence, conservation, or dissipation of certain physical quantities—carry crucial physical information and play a vital role in ensuring the well-posedness of the equations. If numerical methods violate these fundamental structures, they may lead to numerical instability, physically nonsensical results, or computational failure. This report will present our recent research in the following two areas:

(1) Structure-preserving computation and theory for hyperbolic partial differential equations, and their applications in fluid dynamics and astrophysics;

(2) New methods for intelligent inference of unknown equations driven by data and physical structures, as well as the development of corresponding software packages.

Speaker Profile: Kailiang Wu is a tenured professor and Ph.D. advisor in the Department of Mathematics at Southern University of Science and Technology and at the Shenzhen International Center for Mathematics. His research focuses on numerical solutions to partial differential equations, computational fluid dynamics and computational physics, as well as machine learning and data-driven modeling. Together with his collaborators, he has achieved systematic research results in high-precision structure-preserving numerical methods and their theoretical analysis, as well as in deep learning and the modeling of unknown equations. Related papers have been published in SIAM Review (Spotlight), SIAM J. Numer. Anal., SIAM J. Sci. Comput., Math. Comp., Numer. Math., M3AS, J. Comput. Phys., Nat. Commun., ApJS, and Phys. Rev. D, as well as at machine learning conferences and in journals such as ICML and IEEE Trans. Artif. Intell. He has received the Zhong Jiaqing Mathematics Award from the Chinese Mathematical Society (2019) and the 2024 Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award for Young Scientists in Technological Innovation; he was selected for the National High-Level Youth Talent Program; and he has served as principal investigator on projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China’s Youth Science Fund (Category A), Major Research Program Cultivation Projects, and General Projects, as well as the Shenzhen Outstanding Young Scholars Program.
