Liyuan Scholars Colloquium Session 184

Title: Statistical Modeling and Analysis of Biomedical Data

Speaker: Professor Jin Shuilin (Harbin Institute of Technology)

Time: 16:00–17:00, October 24, 2026

Location: Room 601, Huiyan Building, Yuehai Campus, Shenzhen University

Abstract:With the advancement of gene sequencing technology, large-scale biomedical data has been generated. This data presents numerous challenges, such as high levels of noise and extreme sparsity. It is therefore crucial to use statistical methods to model this data and uncover the underlying patterns in life sciences and medicine. This presentation will draw on examples of statistical modeling of biomedical data to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing statistical data analysis.

Speaker Profile: Jin Shuilin is a professor in the School of Mathematics at Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), a doctoral advisor in statistics and mathematics, and the academic leader of the statistics discipline. He is recognized as a national-level high-caliber talent and currently serves as Chief Engineer of the Department of Development Planning and Discipline Construction at HIT, Director of the Heilongjiang Center for Applied Mathematics, a member of the Ministry of Education’s Teaching Guidance Committee on Statistics, and Vice Chair of the Resources and Environment Branch of the Chinese Society for Field Statistics, among other roles. He has long been engaged in research in biomedical informatics and biomedical statistics. He has published more than 70 academic papers in journals such as PNAS, Nature Computational Science, Nature Communications, Genome Biology, and Genome Research. His research has been cited more than 2,000 times by renowned scholars, including Professor Nie Qing, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and three of his papers have been selected as ESI Highly Cited Papers, with an H-index of 25. He has led more than 20 national and provincial-level projects, including Key Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Key Projects of the Joint Fund, the Heilongjiang Provincial Outstanding Young Scientist Fund, and sub-projects of the National 863 Program, and has received one First Prize in Natural Sciences from Heilongjiang Province.
